NIHP Public-Patient Advisory Committee moves forward

A new North Island Hospitals Project Public-Patient Advisory Committee meets for the first time next week to help gather and enhance community and patient involvement in the new hospitals now under construction in the Comox Valley and Campbell River.

“The North Island Hospitals Project was very encouraged by the amount of interest shown in the Public-Patient Advisory Committee,” says Chief Project Officer Tom Sparrow. “The response from the North Island communities has been excellent.”

A call was issued in September for expressions of interest from volunteers from mid and north Island communities to serve on the new committee. The project received many applications and conducted many interviews with interested community members. The call period closed in November.

The new committee includes 14 people representing the diverse demographic of the mid and north Island; from the Comox Valley and Campbell River to Mt. Waddington communities. The committee will be involved in community engagement activities to gather community and patient perspectives on the new hospitals and to seek input on improvements that can be made to enhance accessibility to the new hospitals.

“The committee members will play an important role providing input on key public and patient areas of the two new hospitals now under construction,” says Sparrow. “Thank you to everyone who expressed interest in the committee.”

The NIHP Public-Patient Advisory Committee is scheduled to hold its inaugural/orientation meeting next week. The Committee will meet bi-monthly or quarterly, depending on the project schedule, and will serve for the duration of the project.

The $606.2 million North Island Hospitals Project includes a new $331.7 million, 153-bed Comox Valley Hospital in Courtenay on Lerwick Road near Ryan Road, and a new $274.5 million, 95-bed Campbell River Hospital on the existing hospital site at 375 – 2nd Avenue. Both hospitals are scheduled for completion by late 2017.
