A healing and wellness environment for patients and their families is welcoming and offers spaces to relax. Employees, physicians and others can also work together in the space to promote health and wellness. This principle will be considered for all design aspects, including:
- Views to nature
- Positive distractions
- Art, music and the ability to participate in activities.
Evidence Based Design
“Evidence Based Design” or “EBD” means that decisions about the design of each facility will be based on credible research, information from comparable projects, and information about how Island Health works, in order to achieve the best possible outcomes. The goal of EBD is to deliver measurable improvements.
LEAN approach to service delivery flows
The design of the facilities should facilitate the delivery of efficient and effective workflow and processes and eliminate waste, within both clinical and non-clinical processes. Wherever appropriate, standardization to reduce errors and improve quality of service delivery will be applied.
Elder and Patient Friendly
The project will create elder friendly, patient centred facilities that support excellence and innovation in the delivery of safe, quality healthcare. The facilities will be designed to meet the needs of patients, visitors, employees, physicians, volunteers, learners, researchers and teachers now and into the future.
Consistency of Design
The project aims to plan and design systems that are as similar as possible, acknowledging differences with respect to the different sites.
Use of Wood
As per the Wood First Act (British Columbia), the project will incorporate wood products into the design to the extent that the use of wood products is permissible under the B.C. Building Code.
The facilities are being designed to achieve LEED Gold Certification. The design and construction will promote environmental quality, protect health and indoor environmental quality, and provide social benefits and economic vitality.
Efficient Use of Resources
The project gives priority to efficient use of resources, and will consider efficiencies and innovations that may be possible through integrating systems.
Alternative Sources of Energy
The project design will consider alternative sources of energy, explore opportunities for recovering waste heat, and consider the development of biomass cogeneration.
The project is applying a total systems approach to minimize energy consumption and incorporate energy consumption management techniques that are targeted to stabilize and optimize energy flows and achieve Carbon Neutrality.
