North Island Hospitals Project employment and skills training reaching new heights

Hospitals Project hosts carpentry students

The new Comox Valley Hospital construction site is providing “priceless” outside-the-classroom educational opportunities to North Island College Carpentry students, says NIC Carpentry Instructor Tom Klatt following a recent tour of the site.

“It’s a unique opportunity to have this right in our backyard, where you just walk out the door and 100 yards away are guys building a huge job. It couldn’t be better, really. It’s priceless in a lot of ways.”

Public-Patient Advisory Committee making its mark on North Island Hospitals Project design


The complex process of designing new hospitals in the Comox Valley and Campbell River is progressing well, thanks to a comprehensive team of builders, architects, physicians, clinicians and others, including an Aboriginal Working Group and members of the Public-Patient Advisory Committee (PPAC).

NIHP Community Information Meetings return in September


The North Island Hospitals Project (NIHP) is hosting a new round of its regular quarterly community information sessions to provide updates on the new $331.7 million, 153-bed Comox Valley Hospital and the new $274.5 million, 95-bed Campbell River Hospital, both slated for completion in late 2017.

Check out our new hospital construction site aerial videos


Here’s a bird’s-eye view of the Campbell River and Comox Valley hospital construction sites from mid-August. Our friends at SuavAir, based in Cumberland and Campbell River, have been taking video and still images of the two construction sites since May. For safety reasons, the videos were shot on a Sunday morning, when work on the sites below was at a minimum.

Comox Valley Hospital construction to impact walkway


Construction of the new Comox Valley Hospital parkade will require a temporary closure of the public walkway along the hospital project’s north perimeter starting in September.

(Please see attached map).

The construction contractor, Graham, maintained the walkway during excavation of the parkade footprint, but the walkway will be temporarily closed September 15, 2015 during construction of the parkade, a nearby retaining wall, and installation of a new sanitary sewer line.

The walkway is anticipated to reopen March 1, 2016.

North Island Hospitals Project milestone celebrated


Earlier this year, the North Island Hospitals Project held a Design Development Celebration event to mark the completion of the design phase and to prepare for another important stage – the fit out phase.

More than 200 people attended the event in January, including staff from the North Island Hospitals Project, champions from our 30 clinical user groups, representatives from working groups such as the Aboriginal Working Group, and representatives from Tandem Health Partners.
